Super Bowl
The Super Bowl is the final championship American Football game in the NFL. It dates back to 1967 and was instigated as part of a merger between the two major American Football leagues when the winner of each league would compete against each other in the Super Bowl. The name originated from a children’s game, and although it was only intended as a temporary name, it stuck. The Super Bowl is buried deeply in the Psyche of the American nation, and is the major sport event of the year, drawing the largest television audiences and creating a huge party atmosphere. The game is played on the first Sunday in February though originally it was played some weeks earlier. The winner of the Super Bowl is awarded the Vince Lombardi Trophy. The late Vince Lombardi died prematurely in 1970 and was a football coach who coached the Green Bay Packers, a legendary team which won the first two Super Bowl games. The match is always staged with a huge party atmosphere, and celebrity guests traditionally provide entertainment during the breaks and before the game starts, sometimes creating controversy as exampled by the famous so-called wardrobe malfunction that happened to Janet Jackson. The venue of the Super Bowl is decided in a bidding system where candidate cities are selected using a number of criteria which include the standard of the available facilities along with their perceived management abilities. The schedule is usually in place several years in advance, and the next four games will take place in Miami (2010), Texas (2011) Indianapolis (2012) and New Orleans (2013).
