Ryder Cup

The Ryder Cup Matches is a golf tournament that is played every two years between the USA and Europe, and the winners are awarded the Ryder Cup trophy. The venue alternates between the USA and Europe. The first match took place in 1927 at the Worcester Country Club in Worcester Massachusetts and the first one in Europe was played at the Moortown Golf Club in Leeds, England. The Ryder Cup Matches uses a match play format in which points are awarded on a hole by hole process. One point is awarded to the golfer who wins the hole. These are played out in a number of competitions, the format of which can change, and which are played over a three day period. Matches combine team and individual games and they include fourball matches, foursomes matches, and singles matches. In a fourball match each player in a team has their own ball, whilst in a foursomes match shots are alternated by players in the same team. In total, twenty eight matches are played. The European team is selected by the PGA European Tour in combination with the Official World Golf Rankings whilst the American team is selected from according to the results of qualifying championships in combination with the captain’s personal selections. Originally the European side consisted of only England and Ireland, but this was extended in 1979 to include the rest of continental Europe. The effect of this extension was to remove the dominance of America, and over recent years Europe has scored more victories than the USA. The event is highly competitive and tends to stir up emotions and national pride, which has led to some famous controversies, including accusations of cheating. The 2010 Ryder Cup Matches took place at the Celtic Manor Resort in Newport, Wales and was be captained by Corey Pavin for the USA and by Colin Montgomerie for Europe.
