The Dante Stakes at York looks set to provide some vital clues to next month’s Epsom Derby with a number of potential classic winners lining up on the Knavesmire on Thursday.

The British weather is currently playing havoc with the classic trials, and much of the gloss was taken off today's Stobart Barristers Dee Stakes with the late withdrawal of Derby second favourite Bonfire.

The Group 3 contest was reduced to just four runners, and the end of the race looked more like the finish of a novice chase rather than a race that had produced two Derby winners ( Oath and Kris Kin ) over the last 15 years.

Bonfire's trainer, Andrew Balding, was unhappy with the conditions on the Roodee, and will run the son of Manduro in either next weeks Dante Stakes at York, or send the horse straight to Epsom on June 2nd.

Although today's 1m 2 1/2f contest lacked any strength in depth, it was won in impressive fashion by another Aidan O'Brian trained Derby possible, with the beautifully bred Astrology.

Asked to make all of the running under the trainers' son Joseph, the Galileo colt gradually wound up the pace and had the opposition in trouble some way from home, eventually passing the post eleven lengths to the good.

Just where this performance ranks in the stables' classic pecking-order is open to question, but the winner can be guaranteed to make a mark in the middle-distance division over the coming months.

The best price about Astrology for the Derby is now 20/1, available with several firms, including Coral, William Hill and Bet365, although Boylesports, who are going non-runner no bet, are a more cautious 14/1.

With O'Brien likely to have a strong supporting cast to hot favourite Camelot, it would be no surprise if Astrology was allowed to take his chance, and if the ground at Epsom is anything like that at Chester, this horse, who possesses stamina in abundance, would be dangerous to underestimate.

A victory for the son of Manduro is likely to see his odds ( 16/1 ) slashed for the Derby, whereas a poor run would probably see him scratched from the race.With this in mind, Boylesports are likely to see plenty of interest in Frankie Dettori's probable Derby mount.

On the Oaks front, the Aidan O'Brien trained Was ( 20/1 with Boylesports ) has a Musidora entry next Wednesday, and a win there would give the stable another option in a race where they appear to have a vice-like grip.

Investec Oaks - Ante Post Betting Update

Chester's Cheshire Oaks has proved a decent trial for the Epsom version over the years. In 2007 Light Shift completed the double for trainer Henry Cecil and jockey Ted Durcan, while last years victor Wonder of Wonders found only Dancing Rain too good in the 1m 4f fillies classic.

An impressive victory by one of today's runners could have shaken up the betting for Epsom, but after what looked a below average renewal, it would be a major surprise if the contest turned out to have any bearing on the classic in just over three weeks time.

Victory went to the unconsidered Franny Norton ridden Good Morning Star, who does not even have an entry for Epsom, while runner-up Betterbetterbetter will have to live up to her name if she is to progress to classic level, although trainer Aidan O'Brien was more positive saying " we brought her here to see if she was an Oaks filly and on what I have seen, I couldn't say she isn't."

With William Hill, Betfred and Totesport all quoting odds of 33/1 it would appear that bookmakers were less than impressed with the daughter of Galileo, while the third and gamble of the race Cubanita is as big as 50/1 for Epsom glory.

Connections of the winner are unlikely to supplement the filly for the Oaks, as owner Dr Koukash appears to have more realistic plans, saying " I had been looking for a claimer for her but we'll probably take her to Royal Ascot now over a mile and a half ( Ribblesdale ) and see what happens."

The main market mover of the day has been 1000 Guineas third Maybe, who is now as short as 3/1, although 5/1 is still available with BlueSquare.Stable companion Kissed is still favourite with most firms however, but Ladbrokes just prefer the former, quoting the fillies at 7/2 and 4/1 respectively

The Aidan O'Brien stable could possible run Astrology, who was beaten less than three lengths by two top class colts in Dragon Pulse and Parish Hall at the Curragh last August, and connections would presumeably know where this one stands in the Derby pecking order.

Richard Hannon's Crius has never finished out of the first two and ran well to chase home Trumpet Major in the Craven Stakes recently, while Kingsdesire beat Bonfire's stablemate Goldoni at Doncaster, before the latter went on to win the Investec Derby Trial at Epsom.

Roger Varian's Iktihaam has an entry but is more likely to wait for York's Dante Stakes next week, but the unbeaten Main Sequence, and two promising types in Model Pupil and Uriah Heep are sure to provide stiff opposition to the Derby hopeful.
