Bet365 hit hard by Mali comeback

One lucky punter walked away with more than £13,200 as Bet365 were left to count the cost of yesterday’s thrilling opener to the African Cup of Nations. Hosts Angola were 4-0 up with just eleven minutes remaining before Mali fought back to equalise in the dying seconds, ensuring a big pay-day for some punters but a big headache for bookmakers who had laid the 4-4 draw at long odds during in-play betting. Bet365 spokesman Steve Freeth today revealed that they were 400/1 at one point on the 4-4 draw, with one lucky punter staking £33 on those odds to walk away with a return of £13,233. “We’re generally 400/1 about a 4-4 outcome and the correct score has been popular ever since Liverpool drew by that same scoreline two games running late last season,” said Freeth. “One lucky customer had £33 on the Angola game ending 4-4 at 400/1, plus we had numerous smaller bets at the same price, and the liabilities are already starting to build up for the other group games in the African Nations Cup.” It seems that the bookmaker have learnt their lesson from the opening night, with just 16/1 available on their being another 4-4 draw in the rest of the tournament.
