Ruby Walsh To Ride Favourite In Grand National

Tagged under: Grand National

As expected, Ruby Walsh will be on board Big Fella Thanks in the 2010 John Smith's Grand National in two weeks time. Sixth behind Mon Mome in last year's event as a novice, the 8 year old has had the Aintree showpiece as his long range target ever since. The Paul Nicholl's trained gelding has had a perfect build up to the race, with just three runs this season, the last of which was an impressive victory over stablemate Pasco, despite racing over an inadequate trip of 2m 4f. In an interview with the Irish Examiner Walsh said of his mount: " He started this season off 150 and has been given 146 in the National and you would hope he will prove extremely competitive, especially after his impressive victory over an inadequate trip at Newbury recently". Beaten just over 22 lengths in 2009, Big Fella Thanks is due to meet the winner on 10lb better terms this time, and must have a great chance of turning the tables on the Gold Cup third. Walsh had been expected to partner Tricky Trickster in the big race, until that horse ran disappointingly behind Imperial Commander, when quietly fancied for the Cheltenham showpiece. Just over a week ago both horses were disputing favouritism for the National, but whereas Big Fella Thanks is now a best price 8/1, Tricky Trickster can be backed at a standout 20/1 with sportingbet.
