PDC Darts: Dennis Priestley wins the Australian Players Championship

Veteran Dennis Priestly won the Australian Open Players Championship in Sydney on Sunday when beating Mark Hylton 6-3 in the final. The world’s top players, including Phil Taylor and Raymond van Barneveld, swerved this event and 60-year-old Priestly took advantage with a victory that will secure his place in October’s World Grand Prix. Priestly had to overcome tournament favourite Simon Whitlock on his way to the final, beating the Wizard of Oz 6-3 in the quarter-finals. He earned his place in the final when coming off best in an 11-leg thriller against reigning Australian Open Champion Paul Nicholson. Losing finalist Mark Hughes collected a £2,500 prize to give himself a chance of earning a World Grand Prix place. Hughes also featured in an 11-leg semi-final when he overcame Aussie Sean Reed who is in the top ten of Australia’s Order of Merit this year. The Australian Players Championship was the 22nd of the 38 event tour, the final was the culmination of a series of events at the Revesby Workers Club in Sydney over the weekend. Top Aussie player, Simon Whitlock won Sunday’s non-PDC ranked Oceanic Masters with Robert Thornton and Tony Eccles gaining Australian Grand Prix wins.
