Online bookmakers are offering free bets to new customers for the US Open tennis tournament which starts today at Flushing Meadows, New York. Five time US Open winner, Roger Federer sets out to regain his title today when he meets Argentinian Brian Dabul in the Arthur Ashe Stadium. Federer suffered his only defeat in this event since 2004 at the hands of another Argentinian when losing last year’s final to Juan Del Potro. Today’s opponent Dabul spent the first six months of the year playing the Challenge tour and comes to the event ranked 96 in the world. World number two Federer lost his number one ranking to Rafael Nadal in the summer but is the player to beat on the US Open hard courts. The 29-year-old Swiss is attempting to reach a landmark achievement that proved beyond legendary Americans Jimmy Connors and Pete Sampras in winning this event for a sixth time. His preparation couldn’t be better having won the Masters event in Cincinatti last week when beating Mardy Fish in 3 sets. Online bookmaker Bodog are odds of 9/4 for Federer to make history and win this year’s US Open title, Britain’s Andy Murray and top seeded Rafael Nadal are both 7/2. While Murray and Nadal pose obvious threats to Federer’s chances at Flushing Meadows, two Americans are coming into form at the right time to challenge for a home victory. Mardy Fish is in the form of his life having won in Atlanta in July and ran Federer very close in the Cincinatti final last week. Federer will be pleased the 19th seed is in the same quarter of the draw as former champion Andy Roddick, which means he can only meet one of them at the semi-final stage should they progess.
