England face toughest Euro 2012 qualifier test in Switzerland

Tagged under: Euro 2012

England will look to carry on the good form from their 4-0 win over Bulgaria when they face Switzerland on Tuesday night. Fabio Capello’s side eventually cruised to victory but the scoreline probably flattered the Three Lions, who were still patchy in possession of the ball throughout the 90 minutes. This midweek game however will be a much tougher prospect. The Swiss, who are managed by legendary German coach Otmar Hitzfeld, will certainly be confident of getting at least a point from this one, after carrying on their improving results from the World Cup. In the opening game in South Africa, they beat eventual winners Spain 1-0, showing that they are now a side who cannot be taken lightly by any international side. Capello has already had to deal with a mini crisis this week after tabloid revelations about his star player Wayne Rooney’s private life surfaced over the weekend. Rooney is expected to play after getting support from his manager, but the Italian will have to shuffle his pack in defence, following Spurs defender Michael Dawson’s wincing knee injury which should keep him out of action for over a month. The fixture looks to be one of the most challenging during England’s qualifying campaign, with Wales not expected to be in with a chance or reaching Euro 2012. Despite England being so poor at tournaments in recent years, it is generally predicted that, the same as in the race for the World Cup, they will be able to top the group. England are 11/2 with bookmaker Blue Square to nick this one 1-0, something they have done many times in similar situations over the years. Odds correct at time of writing and are subject to change
