Sportingbet go best odds for Frankel in Sussex Stakes

Internet bookmaker, Sportingbet is offering best odds of 4/5 for Sussex Stakes favourite Frankel on the morning of his head-to-head duel with Canford Cliffs at the Glorious Goodwood meeting.

Henry Cecil’s brilliant three-year-old leads the betting market for the four-runner race over 1 mile of the West Sussex track which brings the eagerly anticipated clash with last years winner Canford Cliffs, best odds of 13/8 at Betfred.

Four-year-old Canford Cliffs was being hailed as the king of milers after his sensational win in the Queen Anne Stakes at Royal Ascot where he beat Goldikova with one of todays rivals, Rio De La Plata back in fourth place.

Rio De La Plata is the outsider in the field and while shouldn’t be totally discounted, he can be backed at odds of 50/1 with several bookmakers. French raider, Rajsaman completes the line up and is best odds of 33/1 at bet365 for the four-year-old colt who was beaten a length by Godikova on his last outing at Longchamp in May.

The race is being billed as a duel between Cecil’s 2000 Guineas winner and Canford Cliffs who has won his last five outings which were all Group 1 races. Richard Hannon’s horse was receiving 8lbs from Rip Van Winkle when winning last year’s Susses Stakes and now the shoe is in the other foot, when he must concede the same weight-for-age allowance to Henry Cecil’s stable star.

Punters will hope Tom Quealy gives Frankel a more patient ride than he did in the St James Palace Stakes at Royal Ascot, where he clearly went too soon and ended hanging on grimly to beat Zoffany.
