WARRINGTON IN DRIVING SEAT FOR PLAY-OFF SERIES

Warrington secured the League Leaders Shield with a 34-12 win at Hull on Friday putting the Wolves in pole position for the Play-off series which starts on Friday. Having pipped Wigan to the regular season trophy, Warrington face the easier route to the Grand Final to be held at Old Trafford on Saturday 8th October.

On completion of the regular season fixtures on Sunday, the line-up for week one of the Play-off series has been determined with the top four sides to play off against each to face the winners of the Elimination Play-offs between 5th to 8th placed sides in the week 2 semi-finals.

On Friday, Warrington will play at home against Huddersfield Giants who ended the regular season 12 points away in fourth place. A win against Huddersfield will earn Warrington the pick of teams to play in the semi-final, the choice will be between the winners of Leeds against Hull in the first Elimination Play-off or the victors of the other eliminator between Catalan Dragons and Hull KR.

The play-off qualifier against Huddersfield won’t be a pushover for Warrington, both sides won their home fixtures when playing each other during regular season. A notable point from those games was Huddersfield's determination to play hard until the end, outscoring Warrington in the second half on each occasion. Warrington will need to be on their mettle for a sustained assault from Huddersfield at the weekend.

Warrington have never won the Super League since it began in 1996 and while delighted to pick up some rare silverware, coach Tony Smith knows the battle is just beginning. Speaking after the win at the KC Stadium which sealed the Super League Leaders Shield, he said: "We've come a long way as a club. We've finished number one in defence and attack. I'm proud of everyone at the club. We want to keep our feet on the ground. We're proud of it and there's not much silverware on offer, but there's a long road to go."

Defending champions Wigan have been Warrington’s closest rivals throughout the season and are available at odds of 11/8 to retain the Super League title with SkyBet and Stan James. Wigan will play St Helens in the second play-off qualifier at the DW Stadium on Sunday.
