England captain Alistair Cook accepted his team were “out-skilled in every department” against India when collapsing to a 126-run defeat in the opening one-day international against India in Hyderabad on Friday. Cook admitted the batsmen were forced to take risks in chasing a big target, which could be attributed to some uncharacteristic errors in the field and some untidy bowling in the final 20 overs. But, Cook is confident that England can put the result behind them before the second match in Delhi on Monday: “Over the last 12 months -18 months as a test team and one day team we have re-grouped and we have come back better,” he said. Anticipating a tougher test than when winning the home ODI series 3-0 against India in the summer, Cook has faith his team can still go on to win the series, adding: “I believe the character we’ve got, we can pull it off”.
