League One side Sheffield United will entertain Yorkshire rivals Bradford in Tuesday’s Johnstone Paints Trophy and go into the clash with the League Two side as joint favourites to win the competition along with another League One side, Preston.

Despite losing 2-1 at Stevenage on Saturday, Sheffield United remain in a play-off place with hopes of bouncing straight back to the Championship and are in the running to pick up their first silverware since winning division Four of the Football League in 1982. Sheffield United will perform in front of their own fans for the first time in this season’s Johnstones Paint Trophy following away victories in the previous two rounds when they knocked out Burton Albion and then Rotherham by the same 2-1 score line.

As in the first two rounds, manager Danny Wilson could rest a number of his first choice players but there will be no place for Chris Morgan, Andy Taylor and Johannes Ertl who remain sidelined with knee injuries. Ched Evans will be looking to start against Bradford, the Welsh forward scored the last minute winner against Rotherham in the second round and came off the bench to score Sheffield United’s only goal at the weekend.

Bookmakers are taking no chances about Evans getting on the score sheet in front of the Sky cameras on Tuesday. Only Boylesports and Stan James are prepared to offer odds against (11/10) Evans scoring at anytime in the game while they both go 4/1 for him to score the first goal of the game.

Bradford also suffered a loss in league action on Saturday, their 1-0 home defeat to Cheltenham Town was their third game without a win and they find themselves struggling in the bottom three of League Two. Bradfor boss Phil Parkinson is unable to call on two ex-Sheffield United players, Andrew Davies and Kyel Reid who will miss the chance to play against their former club through suspension. Defender Robbie Threlfall (thigh) and winger Jemie Devitt (hamstring) may not recover in time for Tuesday and are doubtful starters.
