2009 champion Adam Scott returns to his homeland for the Australian Open which he hopes will be a stepping stone to achieve his ambition of becoming the world’s number one golfer.

Scott, who hails from Adelaide, has risen to number eight in the world rankings following an impressive season which featured a win at the WGC - Bridgestone Invitational at Firestone in August to augment seven top ten finishes on the 2011 US PGA Tour. Scott has long been considered one of the most talented players in world golf and he now feels he is ready to climb to the very top of the tree.

"I'm not that far away, I know Luke [Donald] has a pretty good lead on No.2 even at the moment but I'm sitting at No.8 and with consistent play over the next year I believe No.1 is certainly attainable," said Scott at his press conference on Wednesday. "I think it's the first time in my career as a professional that it's been realistic for me."

Scott faces some stiff opposition from two other top ten players, American Dustin Johnson is ranked number five in the world and a 16/1 chance in Sydney plus compatriot Jason Day, a 11/1 chance at bet365 and William Hill, who is ranked above Scott at number seven.

The man who had dominated world golf until being sidelined from the game for most of 2010 is Tiger Woods who returns to Australian where he won his last tournament at the Australian Masters in 2009. Woods has missed much of this season with injury but has recently returned and is optimistic he can claw his way back to the top after being written off by many in the last two years.

Woods is joint second favourite at 11/1 with Betfred to win the Australian Open, but Ladbrokes has promised to pay out on the second placed player if the former world number one is successful at the weekend.
