David Beckham Odds On To Play For GB Olympic Team

The odds on David Beckham playing a role in the GB Olympic football team are continuing to shorten as the former England captain has openly expressed his interest in being part of the GB squad.
Beckham is not shy about proposing himself as captain of the team either . In a LA press conference yesterday Beckham admitted:"I would love to be captain. I was lucky enough to captain my country and to lead Great Britain into an Olympics would be special for any player.'
The 36 year old has just signed a further two year contract with LA Galaxy but used the conference to promote his interest in the GB Olympic football bid and continued "It's an Olympics in the east end of London , where i grew up and i am excited about hopefully being involved. I've had conversations with Stuart Pearce and as long as I'm fit , healthy and in form , hopefully i have a chance of making the team.
Bookies now think Beckham is a certainty to play some part in the GB Olympic football team with William Hill quoting odds of only 1/8 , with Beckham at odds of 9/2 not to play any part.
Other former Man Utd team mates Ryan Giggs and Paul Scholes are also fancied to join Beckham as part of the over 23 element of the squad with William Hill quoting odds of 2/5 that Ryan Giggs will be in the squad and 2/1 for Paul Scholes.
William Hill are becoming very active with 2012 Olympic betting and spokesman Graeme Sharpe said "Having Beckham , Giggs and Scholes in the team will certainly raise interest in the tournament and given the sudden glut of oldies playing in the Premier League it would appear to be a very likely scenario".
William Hill have also opened a book on how many Welsh players will start the first GB Olympic football team's game in the tournament. "
One can make a strong case for Giggs, Ramsey, Bale and Swansea's on loan Spurs' defender, Steven Caulker, all being in the running' according to Sharpe.
Certainly Gareth Bale is a certainty if he wishes to play and there are many calls already that Bale and not Beckham should captain the GB Olympic team.
However punters should note that selection for the GB Olympic team is not that straightforward with manager Stuart Pearce yesterday confirming that seven players have already turned down the chance to play for Team GB.
Punters should proceed with caution.
