    Match Preview

Group E winners France take on Group F runners up Nigeria in the second round of the World Cup at Estadio Nacional in Brasilia on Monday.

Confidence in the French camp is sky high after dominating their group and there’s a feeling Didier Deschamps squad could go a long way in this tournament. The bookmakers are taking no chances about Le Bleus to beat Nigeria, with the best odds for France to win in 90 minutes, 40/85 on Boylesports.

France enjoyed an explosive start to their World Cup campaign, defeating Honduras 3-0 in the opener before leaving Switzerland shell-shocked with a 5-2 rout in the next game. Deschamps could afford the luxury of leaving out six players for the last match against Ecuador. There was nothing riding on the match as they had already done enough to win the group and the game ended 0-0 for France to finish on seven points.

The French have one of the players of the tournament so far in Karim Benzema who has been scoring and creating goals in almost equal measure, scoring three with two assists. The Real Madrid striker has been rejuvenated in Brazil and forms part of a forward line that will take a lot of stopping in the last 16.

You can back Karim Benzema to score the first goal at 4/1 on Ladbrokes.

Nigeria have done well to make it this far, scraping a 0-0 draw against Iran followed by a narrow 1-0 win against Bosnia & Herzegovina to garner the four points needed to qualify from their group. Winger Ahmed Musa turned it on against Argentina in the final group game to score two goals, he terrorised the Argentine defence who were fortunate to have Lionel Messi on his best form at the other end of the pitch. Nigeria lost 3-2 but showed they can be dangerous on the day, so the outcome of this second round match may not be as straight forward as the odds make out.

You can back Nigeria to qualify for the quarter-finals at 4/1 on BetVictor

Premier League fans will be familiar with a number of the Nigerian players most notably Obi Mikel, Peter Odemwhingie, who scored the winner against Iran, Shola Ameobi and Victor Moses who missed the Argentina game with an injury. Moses will have a fitness test before Monday’s game and team mate Michael Babatunde is definitely out with a fractured wrist picked up in training.

The best odds for Peter Odemwhingie to score at any time are 11/2 on Betfair Sportsbook
