    Match Preview

Germany take on Portugal in Group G's opening match at Arena Fonte Nova in Salvador in a game of great significance as the winner will be widely expected to qualify as group winners.

Germany enjoyed a trouble-free campaign in qualifying for the 2014 World Cup and as the leading European contenders for the tournament are available at short odds to top Group G. Portugal had to beat Sweden in a play-off to make it to Brazil, but look to be the side most capable of giving Germany something to worry about.

In nine previous meetings Germany lead the head to head statistics with 5 wins compared to Portugal's 1, while 4 matches between these nations have ended as draws. 3 of those German wins have been in competitive fixtures including a narrow 1-0 victory in the European Championships when the sides last met, while the only World Cup meeting between the sides was a 3-1 success for Die Mannschaft in 2006.

Marco Reus has a knack of opening the scoring and is an obvious candidate for goalscorer bets along with Mesut Ozil who may be available at longer odds as a midfielder, but retains appeal as a likely spot-kick taker. For Portugal many punters won't look beyond Cristiano Ronaldo for their goalscorer bets, but towering defender Bruno Alves offers an aerial threat and this game could easily be decided on a set-piece.
