    Match Preview

USA take on Portugal in Group G at Arena Amazonia in Manaus and the result of this encounter could go a long way to deciding which side will join probable group winners Germany in the Second Round.

While they are considered the underdogs in this clash, USA have a good record against Portugal with 2 wins and one loss in 3 previous meetings. These nations have not played eachother since the 2002 World Cup finals in South Korea and Japan where it was the Stars and Stipes who came out on top in a five goal thriller with a 3-2 victory. Portugal had to battle their way through the play-offs to make it to Brazil and may have something of a point to prove against United States in what could be a pivotal tie in Group G.

Clint Dempsey's form in qualification for the 2014 World Cup was key to USA makiing it to Brazil and he will be a popular bet in the goalscorer markets having notched the first goal on 5 occasions as well as being a likely spot-kick taker. For Portugal Cristiano Ronaldo is an obvious shout and will be the main focus of their attack, but Helder Postiga has a knack of opening the scoring and may be of interest at longer odds if starting the game.
