  • Hosts Brazil are joined by 31 nations who have come through the qualification process to reach the 2014 World Cup finals.

The first round of the finals tournament gets underway on Thursday 12 June and is made up of eight groups of four teams with the top two in each World Cup group qualifying for the next stage.

From the second round onwards, the World Cup is a straight knockout tournament to the quarter-finals, semi-finals and the World Cup final which will be held in Rio de Janeiro on Sunday 13 July.

    • Group A

Brazil are favourite win World Cup Group A in which Croatia, Mexico and Cameroon oppose. The host nation won every match of the dress rehearsal last year and are expected to enjoy similar success in their group fixtures but who will join Brazil in the knockout phase?

    • Group B

World Cup holders Spain have a tough draw in Group B, they play Netherlands in their opener before a potential banana skin against Chile with Australia making up the quartet. The pressure is on to win the group as the runners up are likely to face Brazil in the next round.

    • Group C

Colombia are expected to emerge winners of a weak looking World Cup Group C with Greece, Ivory Coast and Japan providing the opposition. Ivory Coast have some great but ageing talent and must see-off Japan's new-look team and former European champions Greece to progress.

    • Group D

England have drawn Italy, Uruguay and Costa Rica in Group D and a measure of their formidable task can be found in their World Cup odds with bookies making Roy Hodgson's team third favourite to win the group. With expectations low, the Three Lions have nothing to lose.

    • Group E

France have a golden opportunity to repair their damaged reputation and it will be a major shock if Switzerland, Ecuador and Honduras can stop the former title holders emerging as Group E winners. A relatively easy second round fixture opens great possibilities for the victors.

    • Group F

Argentina are one of the leading fancies to win the 2014 World Cup and should qualify for the Second Round as Group F winners. Nigeria, Iran and Bosnia and Herzegovina cannot match the South Americans for individual talent and will fight a three-way battle for second.

    • Group G

Portugal, Ghana and USA provide formidable opposition for Germany in World Cup Group G. Joachim Low's talented squad is favourite to win the group and should they progress as winners, could go on to challenge the South American giants for the 2014 World Cup title.

    • Group H

Belgium's golden generation could be on the verge of a break through to challenge the best in the world. First they must prove they have the tournament mentality to win Group H from Russia, South Korea and Algeria who could be capable of a surprise or two in Brazil.
