Able to both break up opposition attacks and score goals from distance, Claudio Marchisio will be a valuable member of the Italy squad at the 2014 World Cup. The Juventus midfielder is versatile, but his ability to read the game makes him more of a destroyer than a creater and he doesn't shy away from a challenge.
As a product of the youth system at top Italian Serie A club Juventus, Marchisio has been moulded to become one of Italy's most talented midfielders. After captaining the youth team to their first Campionato Primavera title in 12 years, he was able to break into the Juventus senior squad the following season when they were relegated to Serie B in 2006.
After ending the season as a leading midfielder for Juventus and helping them to secure promotion back to Serie A, he was loaned out to Empoli for a season to continue his development where he was one of the club's top performers. After his impressive displays for Empoli, Marchisio returned to Juventus for the 2008–09 campaign in what is seen as his breakthrough season and he has been ever present in their midfield since. Barring his loan spell, Marchisio is a one club man and has lifted three Serie A titles, a Serie B title and two Suppercoppa Italiana titles with the club he supported as a boy.
Marchisio's talent was soon recognised by the national side and he was drafted into Italy's 2010 World Cup squad, but due to being played out of position he was perhaps not seen to best effect in South Africa. He proved to be a far more useful player at Euro 2012 and was ever present as Italy beat the odds to make it to the final, only to find Spain too good.
Claudio Marchisio 2014 World Cup Betting Tips
With a high work rate and good technical abilty on the ball, Claudio Marchisio could perhaps be considered as an outsider for player of the tournament if Italy can get out of Group D and go further than expected in Brazil. However even with his penchant for a long-shot, Marchisio is not the most prolific scorer and may therefore be overlooked.
His tenacious style of play often lands him in trouble with the referee and we can expect to see his name in the book, so betting on him him in the Italy Most Player Booking Points market looks advisable.
