Former Greco-Roman wrestler Dimitrios "Dimitris" Salpingidis has enjoyed his fair share of football success in Greece, and could prove to be one of the side's strongest forces in the 2014 World Cup. With four goals in nine qualifying matches for Greece, Salpingidis carries relatively strong betting odds for individual goalscorer markets that should not be overlooked.
Salpingidis started out as a Greco-Roman wrestler before his switch to football, and began his new career through the youth stages at PAOK FC. He proved himself on his 1999 professional debut against FC Lokomotivi Tbilisi, scoring a goal in what would be a 2-0 win.
Salpingidis scored 62 goals in his 134 showings for PAOK until 2006, during which he was loaned to Kavala FC and duly finished as the top scorer of the Second Division.
A four-year contract was signed by Salpingidis to move to Panathinaikos between 2006 and 2010, where he scored 63 goals in four seasons and was a key player for the side as they claimed the Greek Championship and Cup double in 2010.
He soon returned to PAOK in the summer of 2010 and surpassed 100 Greek Superleague goals with the side that has always been close to his heart, since scoring 48 goals in 189 appearances up to the present day.
Salpingidis has made 73 appearances and scored 13 times for Greece at top international level since his debut in 2005. He scored four goals during nine 2014 World Cup qualifying matches, two of them match winners against Latvia and Slovakia.
He made an appearance in all three of Greece's 2010 World Cup matches, scoring against Nigeria in the second of those.
