Netherlands attacking winger Jeremain Lens will make his bow on the big stage this summer, and he’s one to consider for individual goalscorer markets at the 2014 World Cup having netted five goals in 10 qualification appearances. Lens will carry longer betting odds compared to Netherlands' top strikers but he has pace and scoring ability to make those odds look decent value for money.
Amsterdam-born Lens is the nephew of retired Dutch footballer, Sigi Lens, and started his career playing for the youth sides of local team Spartaan as well as FC Omniworld, Ajax Amsterdam and AZ.
The latter would be the side he made his professional football debut with for the 2005–06 season, playing with the side until 2010 although spending a loan spell at NEC during 2007-08 where he scored 16 goals in 19 appearances. He returned to AZ to duly claim to Dutch Championship the following season, as well as the Dutch Supercup as he scored 18 times during the 75 appearances made for the club.
Lens made the transfer to wear the number nine shirt at PSV Eindhoven during May 2010, first utilising a new attacking winger's role at the club and also playing as a second striker. During three seasons and 137 matches, Lens netted 43 goals, a hat-trick against Heracles and reached a UEFA Europa League quarter-final, scoring 15 goals in 30 league appearances in his final campaign and also claiming the 2011–12 KNVB Cup.
In June 2013, Lens moved to his current side, Ukrainian club FC Dynamo Kyiv, scoring his first goal during a UEFA Europa League Play-off game against FC Aktobe.
Best known for his pace and stamina, Lens will play a winger role in the 2014 World Cup to assist Robin Van Persie in particular on his goal-scoring efforts up front. Lens scored five goals in his recent 10 World Cup qualification match appearances, making his debut in the tournament this summer and taking his goal tally to seven in 22 showings for the Netherlands.
Jeremain Lens World Cup Betting Tips
Lens will arrive at Brazil 2014 at the peak of his career and since making his debut for Netherlands has opened the scoring a number of times. He may not be prolific enough to consider for tournament top scorer but could be good value in goalscorer markets in Netherlands World Cup matches.
