Having reached the Second Round in 2010, you might have expected Japan to perhaps match that at the 2014 World Cup. However, despite Group C being among one of the easier setups, they're not fancied to qualify out of the group ahead of Columbia and Ivory Coast.
Should they upset the 2014 World Cup betting odds and get out of the group though, don't expect them to see off one of Uruguay, Italy or England to reach the quarter-finals.
HOW JAPAN GOT TO THE 2014 WORLD CUP
Japan were one of five teams given a bye to the AFC Qualifying Third Round, where they surprisingly finished second to Uzbekistan in Group C.
They stepped up a gear in Round Four though - as they topped Group B ahead of Australia, who also automatically qualified for the 2014 World Cup.
JAPAN MANAGER AND TRACK RECORD
Italian Alberto Zaccheroni took charge of Japan in 2010 and led them to a record fourth Asian Cup title a year later.
By becoming the first side to qualify for the 2014 World Cup, Japan will compete in their fifth consecutive finals. However, Zaccheroni has it all to do if they are to better their Second Round appearances in 2002 and 2010.
JAPAN KEY PLAYER
While Shinji Kagawa may not have been best utilised by Manchester United since signing in 2012, he arrived from Borussia Dortmund having been named in the Bundesliga Team of the Season.
Kagawa's intellegent movement, pin-point vision and great technique means he is Japan's main attacking force. Add in fantastic distribution and amazing composure on the ball and you can't help but wonder why his club aren't playing him.
At International level, the 25-year-old has already scored 16 goals in 52 appearances and Japan will need Kagawa at his best in Brazil if they are to prove the doubters wrong.
JAPAN 2014 WORLD CUP BETTING TIP
With Columbia and Ivory Coast expected to slog it out for who will qualify out of the group as Group winner, the prices on Japan to fail to qualify aren't great.
However, they should have enough about them to overcome Greece in their 2014 World Cup meeting. So, improve your odds by selecting Japan to finish third in Group C.
