  • Group B is one of the most competitive at the World Cup, but taking the tournament winners and runners-up from four years ago in a straight forecast bet looks the way to go.

Current trophy holders Spain are odds-on to top Group B and Netherlands look best equipped to make the Second Round at the expense of Chile, making odds of 5/2 with Coral and Betfred worthy of consideration on a Spain/Netherlands Straight Forecast bet.

The one team from Group B not yet mentioned is Australia, who we have tipped in an earlier article to exit the competition without registering a single victory, such is the magnitude of their task in this pool. The Socceroos look set to be the whipping boys and will do well to avoid defeat in any of their three matches against superior opposition.

Spain's overall depth in quality and experience throughout their squad puts them in good stead to get the right result against Netherlands in the opening group game on Friday 13th June in Salvador and it's likely that a porous Oranje defence will be found out by their relentless passing and probing. La Furia Roja will then face an injury-hit Chile side in their second match in Rio de Janeiro on June 18th and should register another win there. Chile's main attacking threat Alexis Sanchez plies his trade in La Liga for Barcelona, so it's likely that half of the Spain squad will be quite aware of any tricks he has up his sleeve.

Netherlands may come up short against Spain as they did in South Africa four years ago, but should coast past Australia in their second match to set up a pivotal final clash with Chile in Sao Paulo on June 23rd. Unless Australia pull off a shock result somewhere in the group, the winner of this match will be the side to join Spain in the last 16. At full-strength Chile would no doubt give Netherlands a run for their money, but with scheming playmaker Matias Fernandez ruled out of the tournament and question marks over the fitness of Arturo Vidal, Louis Van Gaal's side look set to finish as Group B runners-up.
