Matt, who spent his whole career playing for Southampton, was born on the Channel Island of Guernsey in 1968. He left school in 1985 and signed for Southampton on the YTS scheme. The youngster made his first team debut a year later against Norwich City in the old First Division and went on to score six goals in 12 starts and 12 substitute appearances by the end of the season.
In all Matt made 443 league appearances for the club scoring 162 goals before his retirement at the end of the 2001/02 season. Fittingly his final goal was the last to be scored in a competitive match at The Dell before Southampton moved to its current home at St Marys. He represented England 21 times at Under 21 level, playing six times for England B and winning eight full England caps.
Matt Le Tissier was an attacking midfielder admired for his dribbling skills and long range shooting. He was also a dead-ball specialist who scored stunning free kicks and had a superb record as a penalty taker, scoring 47 times from 48 attempts. He was the first midfielder to score 100 Premiership goals and can be considered unlucky not to have won more caps for his country. In 1998 Matt scored a hattrick against Russia in an England B game but was controversially overlooked for the World Cup squad by Glen Hoddle.
