BetStars Review – a Sportsbook which will Grow and Grow
BetStars, a new sportsbook which is yet to celebrate its first birthday, has the potential to become the industry leader in online bookmaking.
That may be a bold statement but as BetStars is interwoven with PokerStars, the world’s leading online poker site with millions of customers stretching around the globe and owned by Amaya Inc, the world’s biggest publicly listed online gaming company, the word ‘potential’ could be replaced with ‘probably will’.
Most certainly BetStars will grow exponentially as it only launched in December 2015 when offering just a limited number of markets. In just a few short months it has broadened its horizons. Now listing 29 different spots to bet on, it certainly has a ‘something for everyone appeal’ about it.
The BetStars Free Bets & Gimmicks
Naturally newcomers will immediately be attracted to the BetStars Free Bet Offer for new clients. It rewards them with four £5 free bets in return for placing their first wager of £5 or more on a selection at odds on of 1/2 (1.5 in decimal terminology) any sport pre-event.
That’s the hook, to keep customers loyal BetStars have devised a number of concessions, money back offers and even a gimmick to keep you interested.
That ‘gimmick’ is ‘Spin & Bet’ which allows you to forfeit 10 percent of your bet stake in return for the potential of increasing your winnings ten-fold. However, with just 1 in 200 participating bets receiving the maximum x10 increase in winnings and 1 in 100 earning a five-fold increase this is a promotion which gives nothing away and would be better tailored around Bingo players.
BetStars Money Back
But there is nothing wrong with their ‘Money Back’ offers on NBA, NHL and Soccer bets while ‘Acca Insurance’ is another bulk standard concession which is in place at BetStars.
Two features of BetStars are ‘Cash-Out’ and ‘In Running’. In-running betting on sporting events is now more of a necessity than a ‘feature’ but what is striking with BetStars in-play markets, especially football (or soccer as they prefer to call it) is the over-round which is set around 109%. As for the ‘cash-out’, no site offers outstanding value in this department not alone fairness.
Football/Soccer is clearly the focal-point of BetStars business model and it is pushed on customers at every opportunity. Even the backdrop of each and every sports market page just happens to be a football pitch!
To be fair it is the sport BetStars do best. Invariably 100+ betting markets are on offer for Premiership games and there is usually 50+ different ways of betting on lower league and overseas games.
Beyond football you do not get the feeling BetStars do not want to attract battle hardened serious punters who have become accustomed to a plethora markets on every type of sporting genre imaginable.
Horse racing, for example, is subject of win and each-way bets only. There are no early-prices, there is no ‘place only’ betting and the more exotic markets such as ‘winning distances’, ‘without the favourite’ and ‘match bets’ are nowhere to be seen.
These are all areas BetStars hierarchy need to, and most probably are, working on in their quest to make their sportsbook as successful as their PokerStars poker site. But, if depth in existing markets or the introduction of yet more betting mediums is the centre of BetStars management attention is a matter of conjecture.
With the tab for ‘Cycling’, despite one of the world’s biggest tours being ongoing at the time of writing, taking you to a blank page, one would suggest getting the basics right would be the best starting point.
Back to Basics
Anyway, back to brass tacks. The sites look and feel will be alien to many, only those who were betting online at the turn of the century will be familiar with its very basic layout and they have probably spent the past decade betting somewhere much more slick.
Oh, the sense of ‘sleeping giant’ is overwhelming…
However, a fair bet at a fair price with no hidden clauses and prompt payment is what betting is all about, regardless of something as insignificant as ‘user experience’.
Well the fair bet bit involves scouting out the good old-fashioned value and comparing odds, which may or may not be better at BetStars. Our straw poll shows no outstanding ‘early prices’ and, similarly, there is no mention of ‘Best Odds Guaranteed’ within their glossary.
Thank God for banking (deposit/withdraw processing) and mobile betting two areas where BetStars do excel. This is doubtlessly a result of PokerStars long history and experience of accepting player action from anywhere and anyone within a legal territory.
In fact this common denominator is no major surprise and the more you look around BetStars you get the overwhelming feeling that it is designed to be an outlet for players to dispose of their short-term poker winnings as opposed to lose it to rival card players.
As sleeping giant with huge potential but…
