Defending US Open champion misses out through injury leaving the betting between Dojokovic, Federer and Murray

Defending champion Rafael Nadal was forced to pull out of the 2014 US Open tennis championships due to a wrist injury leaving Novak Djokovic, Roger Federer and Andy Murray at the top of the outright betting market.

The withdrawal of Spain's tennis superstar could see another epic battle between Djokovic and Federer, just months after the pair went head to head in the men's singles final at Wimbledon. The duo, along with Andy Murray, are the front-runners in the betting market and if you fancy backing any of the trio then online bookmakers will give you a free bet today.

Djokovic arrives in New York on the back of his seventh Grand Slam victory, and his second Wimbledon triumph, after a thrilling five-set victory over Federer. The Serb has won once in five final appearances but he will be in a confident mood after emerging victorious in the last meeting between the two. Federer is chasing his record breaking 18th Grand Slam and has won five of the six US Open finals that he has competed in.

It's been a frustrating year for Andy Murray who's best Grand Slam result was reaching the semi-finals of the French Open, crashing out of the Australian Open and Wimbledon in the quarter-finals. Suffering with a persistent back injury, the British no.1 has only returned to full training in recent months following surgery last September and fitness remains a concern for the former Wimbledon and US Open champion.

The 2014 US Open winner could come from further down the rankings. Stanislas Wawrinka won his first Grand Slam in Melbourne back in January when he defeated Nadal by three sets to one and was a semi-finalist in last year's US Open. Jo Wilfried-Tsonga dispatched three of the 'big four' on his way to lifting the Rodgers Cup in August and is the only player to have wins to his name against the top four at major Grand Slam tournaments, although he has never advanced beyond the quarter-finals of the US Open.

The US Open is the fourth and final Grand Slam tennis tournament of the year. Following the Australian Open in January, French Open in May and Wimbledon in June, the US event is held in late August/early September at Flushing Meadows in New York. The tournament is played over two weeks on outdoor hard courts with the two showcourts in the Arthur Ashe stadium and Louis Armstong stadium.

As a betting proposition, there is probably more interest for the US Open in Europe than its host nation, the United States. Tennis betting is extremely popular in mainland Europe at any time of the year and when one of the Grand Slams comes around, like the US Open, bookmakers based in the UK and Europe get prepared for a substantial increase in betting enquiries.

Tennis bettors are spoiled for choice when it comes to Grand Slam betting opportunities with around 25 different betting markets for every match. US Open match betting markets include outright winner, set betting, total sets, total points, handicap betting, tie break betting and more. There is outright betting for the Mens Singles winner and Womens Singles winner along with betting markets to reach the US Open final. Outright betting is further categorised by nationality and for example bookmakers will offer odds for US Open Top American, Top Argentinian and more.

With high demand for the various US Open tennis betting markets, online bookmakers will be prepared to compete for business with attractive odds for outright winner markets and a few bookmakers will offer free bet incentives on individual match betting markets in the way of free bet refunds. Refunded stakes, will typically be given for a player losing in a final set tie break or if the last losing point is an ace. There will be a limit to the size of the free bet refund which will vary from bookmaker to bookmaker. This type of free bet offer may not be reason itself for choosing to bet with one bookmaker over another, as most bettors will be more concerned about getting the highest returns should the bet win. However, shrewd tennis bettors will always make themselves aware of the available free bet refunds as a means of insurance at least and free bet offers could become a determining factor between bookmakers offering the same or similar odds.

The size of free bet refund varies between bookmaker, ranging from as little as £20 free tennis bet sometimes rising to £500 free bet refund. Typically the maximum free bets will be £50 free bet, £100 free bet and £200 free bet refund. For bettors interested in free tennis bets, the main bookmakers to look out for are leading independent bookmakers Betfred, Stan James and Victor Chandler who have track record of offering refunds by way of free tennis bets, although not exclusively. Emerging bookmakers are also prepared to offer free tennis bets to customers especially for the Grand Slams tournaments, such as the US Open.
