The 2015 Ashes got underway with the First Test at SWALEC Stadium, Cardiff on 8th July and concluded with the Fifth Test at The Oval, London on 20th August
The Ashes 2015 Results:
8-12 July – First Test at SWALEC Stadium, Cardiff
England won the toss and elected to bat first and Joe Root put in a great knock for 134 to help England to a first innings total of 430 runs, while Australia were all out for 308. Ian Bell and Joe Root each scored 60 runs in the second innings before England were eventually bowled out for 289, leaving Australia needing 411. Mitchell Johnson scored 77 runs as Australia tried to make a comeback, but Joe Root’s bowling was sublime and he capped a fine performance to catch a wayward shot from Hazlewood to seal the match.
16-20 July – Second Test at Lord’s, London
Australia won the toss and elected to bat. After losing David Warner for 38, the duo of Chris Rogers and Steve Smith hit 284 between them until Stuart Broad dismissed Rogers for 173 and later Smith was dismissed leg before wicket for 215 by Joe Root. Australia then declared on 566/8. England captain Alastair Cook then stabilised the innings with Ben Stokes until the latter was dismissed and Cook got little support from the remaining batsmen, with England bowled out for 312. The visitors quickly took their total to 254/2 in just 49 overs when Clarke decided to declare and England never looked in hope of reacing the 509 target set by Australia, who levelled the series 1-1 with a 405 run victory.
29 July-2 August – Third Test at Edgbaston, Birmingham
Australia won the toss and elected to bat on a rain hit first day, and after lunch the England fast bowlers took quick wickets in the second session to bowl Australia out for 136. Then Ian Bell and Joe Root scored half-centuries to finish the day at a solid position of 133/3, despite losing the wicket of Bell towards the end. Things got worse for the tourists when Steven Finn reduced Australia from 62/1 to 92/5, with five of the top six batsmen being dismissed for single-digit scores and they could only set England a target of 121. England lost both openers cheaply, but unbeaten knocks of 65 from Bell and 38 from Root guided England to a comfortable victory by eight wickets, and a 2–1 series lead.
6-10 August – Fourth Test at Trent Bridge, Nottimgham
England won the toss and elected to field and that proved to be decisive as Australia were bowled out before lunch on the first day for 60 in 18.3 overs. England were much better at the stumps with Jonny Bairstow’s 173 a particular highlight before the hosts decided to declare at 391/9. The Aussies began their second innings with a promising 113-run opening stand between Warner and Rogers, but a collapse soon followed and they were bowled out for 253, giving England a victory by an innings and 78 runs and handing them a victory in the test series.
20-24 August – Fifth Test at The Oval, London
England won the toss and elected to field, but Australia were nsoon in the ascendancy with a century opening partnership between Warner and Rogers, before Steven Smith scored his 11th test century as Australia finished their innings at 481. England were clearly de-motivated having already won the series and were bowled out for 149 before being made to follow on and they eventually lost by an innings and 46 runs.
