EURO 2016 Betting Tips
Having begun in 1960, the 2016 UEFA European Championship will be the 15th edition of the competition. France will play host to the newly expanded 24 team finals, which is comprised of six groups of four teams each, with the top two going through to the knockout stage as normal but, somewhat unsatisfactorily, with the four best third-placed teams also progressing.
That will leave 16 teams at the beginning of the knockout stage, which will be followed by the usual quarter-finals, semi-finals and final. In total the new expanded competition will feature 51 games over 31 days. That should make for some great Euro 2016 betting opportunities.
Of the 24 finalists, five – Albania; Iceland; Northern Ireland; Slovakia and Wales – will be appearing for the very first time. Some are available at big prices should you want to back them to win individual games, their respective groups or (in the spirit of Leicester City) even outright. Look out for Euro 2016 free bet options when backing some of the minnows.
France will be hosting the competition for the third time after they hosted the inaugural European Championships in 1960 and also the 1984 finals. They will be hoping that home advantage can play as big a part in Euro 2016 as it did in Euro 1984. On that occasion Michel Platini starred for the French, scoring a Euro finals record nine goals. The bookmakers believe that home advantage could again be a factor in 2016, with France vying for favouritism alongside World Cup holders Germany at a best price of 7/2 the pair with Paddy Power.
With the European club football season now in it’s final throes, a wealth of Euro 2016 betting tips, previews and guides will soon be available across all forms of media.
EURO 2016 Group Stage
There will be a wide variety of Euro 2016 betting opportunities available at the group stage, ranging from backing the winners of each to who will finish where in the group, who will claim the two automatic qualification spots; straight forecast; dual forecast and who will finish bottom of each group.
Group A betting: France (4/11); Switzerland (9/2); Romania (10/1); Albania (28/1)
France look to have been given the near obligatory cushy draw that host nations invariably benefit from and should qualify comfortably. Switzerland could secure second spot, with Romania and Albania both looking short of an attacking threat at this level.
Group B betting: England (5/6); Russia (100/30); Wales (11/2); Slovakia (9/1)
This doesn’t look a bad draw for England, who it shouldn’t be forgotten sauntered through the qualifiers with the only 100% record. Wales will be really up for the game on 16th June and in Gareth Bale and Aaron Ramsey they have players of real star quality. Russia’s defence is of the vintage variety and if they rely on an old fashioned big striker – they could struggle. Slovakia beat Spain and Ukraine during the qualifiers, so certainly can’t be dismissed.
Group C betting: Germany (2/5); Poland (5/1); Ukraine (17/2); Northern Ireland (28/1)
Germany will be expected to win Group C and have a squad with vast experience that are proven at the very highest level. Poland were the highest goalscorers in qualification, with 33 to their name (although 15 came against Gibraltar) and they did beat Germany in their group. Their defence could be their Achilles heel. There are some very talented players in the Ukrainian squad, but they might lack a top-class striker. Northern Ireland will be delighted to have qualified for Euro 2016, but the draw doesn’t look to have done them any favours.
Group D betting: Spain (4/6); Croatia (7/2); Czech Republic (9/1); Turkey (9/1)
Group D is arguably the Euro 2016 ‘Group of Death’. It’s easy to forget that Spain are not only defending champions, but that they also won the competition in 2006. They certainly can’t be discounted from claiming an unprecedented third consecutive trophy, but they look a little short of firepower. Croatia have an abundance of quality in their ranks, particularly in midfield and could be dangerous. Czech Republic might not have the stars of yesteryear, but they shouldn’t be under-rated. Turkey also have some fine midfield talent.
Group E betting: Belgium (5/4); Italy (7/4); Sweden (13/2); Republic of Ireland (12/1)
Belgium look the pick of Group E and a squad that has been highly-rated for several years now might just be reaching their peak. There’s little to get excited about in the Italy squad, but that was also the case in Euro 2012 when they ended as runners-up. This is almost certainly Zlatan Ibrahimovic’s international swansong, but the supporting cast is unlikely to take Sweden beyond the last 16. The Republic of Ireland will give the proverbial 100%, but they could struggle to win games.
Group F betting: Portugal (1/1); Austria (9/4); Iceland (11/2); Hungary (12/1)
An intriguing group, with only Portugal having had much in the way of experience in finals of major international tournaments over the past few decades. Cristiano Ronaldo always gives them hope and they are sound defensively. Austria impressed in qualifying and are seen as dark horses in some quarters. Iceland have improved markedly in recent years and are in the finals on merit. They could well make the last 16. Hungary are back in the big time after a long barren spell, but they will be hard pressed to progress beyond the group stage.
It’s now half-a-century since England’s first, and to date only, major international trophy, so some additional silverware is long overdue.
Numerous England supporters will want to back the team throughout the finals and there will be ample opportunity to do so with Euro 2016 free bets and Euro 2016 enhanced odds for new customers at various bookmakers.
England go into the finals ranked fourth favourites in the outright Euro 2016 betting, available at a best price of 9/1 (Coral, Ladbrokes and BoyleSports). You can also get 5/1 (Betfred, Ladbrokes and Totesport) on England to reach the Euro 2016 final.
Harry Kane is the shortest priced England player to be Euro 2016 top goalscorer, with BoyleSports 20/1 being the best available price. Those who still believe Wayne Rooney can produce the goods at the highest level can back him at 40/1 (Bet365 and BetVictor).
