Veteran goalkeeper Keylor Navas will probably be a busy man between the sticks for Los Ticos. Navas has earned more than 100 caps for his country and was instrumental in their great 2014 World Cup run. Navas was nominated for the Golden Glove award as he conceded in just two of five matches. He won three Man of the Match awards during that tournament, highlighting just how much work he got through. They will need some big performances from him.
Most of the goalscoring responsibilities will fall on the shoulders of Joel Campbell, who plays for the Mexican side, León. He got the game’s only goal in their Inter-confederation playoff against New Zealand in June to put Costa Rica into the World Cup. Campbell has had a productive 2022 for his country, and they’ll need him to snatch every chance that comes his way.
Costa Rica’s most capped player Celso Borges will step into his third and final World Cup. The 34-year-old midfielder will have a big part to play in his nation’s bid to make an impact in the group stage. Borges plays at home-based club Alajuelense and needs to use his influence to keep his side organised under heavy pressure.
