Iran 2022 World Cup Squad

Here is the confirmed 2022 World Cup squad for Iran.

  • Goalkeepers: Alireza Beiranvand (Persepolis), Hossein Hosseini (Esteghlal), Payam Niazmand (Sepahan), Amir Abedzadeh (Ponferradina).
  • Defenders: Ramin Rezaeian (Sepahan), Abolfazl Jalali (Esteghlal), Hossein Kananizadegan (Al Ahli SC), Shoja Khalilzadeh (Al Ahli SC), Mortza Pouraliganji (Persepolis), Majid Hosseini (Kayserispor), Sadegh Moharrami (Dinamo Zagreb), Milad Mohammadi (AEK), Ehsan Hajisafi (AEK).
  • Midfielders: Saeid Ezatolahi (Vejle Boldklub), Ahmad Nourollahi (Shabab Al Ahli), Ali Karimi (Kayserispor), Rouzbeh Cheshmi (Esteghlal), Vahid Amiri (Persepolis), Mehdi Torabi (Persepolis), Alireza Jahanbakhsh (Feyenoord), Ali Gholizadeh (Charleroi), Saman Ghoddos (Brentford).
  • Forwards: Sardar Azmoun (Bayer Leverkusen), Karim Ansarifard (Omonia), Mehdi Taremi (Porto).

In terms of Iranian talent which will be competing at the World Cup in November, the focus will largely be placed upon Sardar Azmoun and with the Bayer Leverkusen forward having scored 40 goals in 63 international appearances, he certainly has an eye for goal.

Admittedly his tally of goals will have been registered against a number of Asian minnows and although his efforts should not be diminished in the final third of the pitch, there does need to be something of a caveat attached at the same time.

While Azmoun is not the only Iranian who plies his trade on European soil and with captain Ehsan Hajsafi currently appearing for Greek outfit AEK Athens, he will look to add to the 119 caps that he has already in his possession.

Add the likes of Mehdi Terami who is averaging nearly one goal every two international appearances plus the midfield talents of Alireza Jahanbakhsh who helped Feyenoord reach the Europa Conference League final last season and Iran will not be short of skilful players in Qatar.
