World Cup 2018 Preview: Our Team of the Tournament Predictions
January 29, 2018
The World Cup never fails to unveil a superstar and 2018 will be no different.
With the likes of Philippe Coutinho, Harry Kane and Kevin De Bruyne all going into the tournament on magnificent form – so far anyway – we might even see a Team of the Tournament without Lionel Messi or Cristiano Ronaldo.
With so much talent to choose from, we’re going to predict our Team of the Tournament early, picking exactly who we think are going to shine this summer.
We’re going 4-4-2, because if it’s good enough for Mike Bassett, it’s good enough for us. It’s also the standard formation for these things…
Best World Cup Goalkeeper Predictions
The goalkeeping position usually goes to the winner of the tournament and with Germany favourites to win the World Cup, we’d expect Manuel Neuer to retain his position as Dream Team Number 1.
With good reason of course, he’s a wonderful player and we expect the German’s to have the best defence in the tournament.
Best World Cup Defenders Predictions
22-year-old Joshua Kimmich is set to be one of the stand-out players this summer. The full back will be a starter for Joachim Low and could be a key player in their attacking play too. He was voted German Player of the Year last year and is expected to continue progressing this year.
The Barcelona defender has been phenomenal this series and will play a key role in France’s World Cup campaign. We really rate the French for this tournament and a solid base will help the side going forward. We expect the 24-year-old to be a star in keeping things tight for his nation.
The Spanish captain will be a major part of the Spanish teams hopes and could be one of the standout defenders in the competition. He’s been one of the best centre backs in the world for a number of years and we fancy him to strong in what could be his last ever World Cup.
Another Barcelona defender, Jordi Alba has earned 58 caps for his country and is comfortably one of the best left backs in the world. With Lahm now gone from the German team we expect Spain’s Alba to take up the position in the World Cup Team of the Tournament.
Kevin De Bruyne
This World Cup was made for Kevin De Bruyne. He’s becoming one of the best players on the planet and we expect him to be a huge plus for the Belgians. The Red Devils are 12/1 to win the tournament but an in-form De Bruyne can boost that significantly.
He was fantastic at the Euros and we expect him to be a key cog in their side again. A real driving force in both the French and Manchester United side, we expect him to flourish here, particularly with N’Golo Kante beside him and the likes of Antoine Griezmann in front.

There are few players in the world like N’Golo Kante and he will be a huge factor in any success for the French. He’s worth his weight in gold and we expect plaudits to continue following this tournament.
We’re going to stick Neymar out on the wing in this line-up and just like 2014, expect him to be at the heart of all Brazil’s attacking play. The most expensive player in the world will be desperate to become world’s best player and a big tournament could seal that. The Brazilians are 9/2 to win the tournament and if he shines we’d back him in the Golden Boot odds too.
Best World Cup Forwards Predictions
Sergio Aguero hasn’t really had his moment at a major tournament so we fancy him to this time round. The Argentinians will be frightening up top and we’d back him to finish top scorer at 16/1. The City forward scores for fun and we’re tipping him for a Team of the Tournament spot.
There are many forwards we could pick for Team of the Tournament. Antoine Griezmann, Messi, Ronaldo, Romelu Lukaku could have all been in with a shout. However, we want to put one Englishman in there and we’re going with Harry Kane.
Arguably one of the best strikers in the world, Kane will be tipped to get a hatful this summer. A Real Madrid bid to follow??
