Group A World Cup 2022 Team Profiles

Qatar

The tournament hosts are making their first appearance in the World Cup Finals. In recent years, they have competed in the Arab Cup, CONCACAF Gold Cup and AFC Asian Cup.

They made it to the semi-finals of the CONCACAF Gold Cup before losing to the United States and winning the Asian Cup in 2019. This experience of tournament football should be beneficial in their maiden World Cup.

Almoez Ali will be key to any success they have. He has 39 goals for Qatar and was the top scorer during their successful Asian Cup campaign.

Ecuador

The South Americans are back at their first World Cup since 2014 in Brazil. They finished fourth in CONMEBOL qualifying and clinched the final automatic qualification spot.

They have only made it out of the group in a World Cup on one occasion - reaching the last 16 in 2006 before losing 1-0 to a David Beckham-inspired England in Germany.

Moisés Caceido and Pervis Estupiñán are part of the next generation of players Ecuadorian fans will be hoping can lift them out of what looks to be a tough group.

Senegal

Having won their first AFCON title earlier this year, Senegal will be hoping for more international success in Qatar. Unlucky to not make it out of the group in 2018, they can progress this time.

It is 20 years since their historic victory over France in 2002, where they made it to the quarter-finals in their first-ever World Cup appearance.

They have Champions League experience running through the team, and with former Liverpool striker Sadio Mane leading the line, they will provide a tough match for anyone in this tournament.

Netherlands

They missed out on making it to Russia in 2018 but made it to the Semis back in Brazil in 2014. They also made it to their third finals in 2010, losing to Spain in South Africa.

One of the most decorated nations not to win a World Cup, the Dutch will be hoping they can mark their return to the finals with a sustained run in the tournament.

Memphis Depay will provide the main goal threat, while the imposing Virgil Van Dijk will be hoping to captain his country to a first World Cup success in Qatar.
