World Cup Group B has come to an end, and England are the team who have come out on top. One draw combined with two good wins, to give them seven points. Behind them the USA have finished second, and will join England in the knockout round, their victory over Iran saw them through on the final day of games, with Iran and Wales being the two teams who have gone home.

Group B World Cup 2022 Team Profiles

England

After reaching the last four of the 2018 World Cup and agonisingly missing out on winning last summer’s European Championships on home soil, England will now feel that Qatar is the setting for their coming-of-age story.

A story that has certainly seen a beginning and middle section written by manager Gareth Southgate and although the recent Nations League has been something of an unwanted subplot, there is still enough ability in the England squad to write the perfect ending.

Wales

After getting the better of Ukraine in a World Cup play-off, Wales are off to a first World Cup finals in 64 years and with a return to the global stage being long overdue, the last thing they will want to do is go home at the first opportunity.

While it is opportunity that will be afforded to not only Gareth Bale but a whole crop of exciting Welsh talents and with the likes of Kieffer Moore and Neco Williams playing alongside veterans such as Ben Davies and Aaron Ramsey, there is an exciting blend of young and old within the squad.

United States

There is no doubt that the United States have the desire to finally conquer the footballing world, but do they have the talent required to go with it? That is the question that is continually asked of Uncle Sam’s soccer representatives and the exact same will be asked before proceedings in Qatar.

Because after the beautiful game engulfed the country during the 2014 World Cup, an unwanted hiatus was handed to the United States just four years later and with that pent up energy ready to be unleashed, they will certainly be a handful within the confines of Group B.

Iran

For those who know their World Cup history, Iran and the United States have already been pitted together in the group phase of the competition and 24 years ago, it was Mehdi Mahdavikia who went down in Iranian football folklore.

However, Mahdavikia and his teammates of France ‘98 will now have to join the nation in looking to the future and with Iran being handed a rather difficult group in 2022, progress to the Round of 16 is something that seems unlikely.
