World Cup Group B Odds
Although England have had a June to forget in the Nations League, there is still large confidence being shown in the Three Lions when it comes to World Cup matters and with Gareth Southgate’s men currently odds on to top Group B, now they have the task of living up to expectations.
A task that although seems rather simple should not be underestimated at the same time and if England are to navigate safely to the Round of 16 and beyond, then the cream of Southgate’s crop will have to be at their best in this year’s World Cup group stage.
United States 6/1
With England clear favourites to top Group B, the other qualification berth to the Round of 16 is arguably between Wales and the United States and with the latter missing out on the World Cup in 2018, they will be welcome returnees to football’s biggest party.
A party that will welcome some of the biggest emerging talents in world football and with Christian Pulisic leading the charge for the United States, an ever-increasing fanbase back home will hope that he and his fellow squad members can lead the nation to the knockout stages at least.
Although it would be unfair to label Wales as a one-man team, it is also fair to say that the focus will largely be on Gareth Bale and whether or not the current free agent can stay fit and healthy in the build up to the tournament.
Because if the former Real Madrid forward is firing on all cylinders, then so will Wales as a whole and after suffering defeat to England during Euro 2016, the Welsh Dragons would love nothing more to exact revenge in Qatar.
With a group such as this, there was always going to be one nation that has to act as rank outsider and unfortunately for Iran, they have been given the unwanted accolade when looking at the runners and riders in Group B.
That is not to do the Middle Eastern nation a disservice, it is more a case of football’s natural order and although the Iranians may be able to make better use of the potentially punishing football conditions, it is unlikely to help when it comes to overall aptitude on the pitch.
Group B World Cup 2022 Team Profiles
After reaching the last four of the 2018 World Cup and agonisingly missing out on winning last summer’s European Championships on home soil, England will now feel that Qatar is the setting for their coming-of-age story.
A story that has certainly seen a beginning and middle section written by manager Gareth Southgate and although the recent Nations League has been something of an unwanted subplot, there is still enough ability in the England squad to write the perfect ending.
After getting the better of Ukraine in a World Cup play-off, Wales are off to a first World Cup finals in 64 years and with a return to the global stage being long overdue, the last thing they will want to do is go home at the first opportunity.
While it is opportunity that will be afforded to not only Gareth Bale but a whole crop of exciting Welsh talents and with the likes of Kieffer Moore and Neco Williams playing alongside veterans such as Ben Davies and Aaron Ramsey, there is an exciting blend of young and old within the squad.
There is no doubt that the United States have the desire to finally conquer the footballing world, but do they have the talent required to go with it? That is the question that is continually asked of Uncle Sam’s soccer representatives and the exact same will be asked before proceedings in Qatar.
Because after the beautiful game engulfed the country during the 2014 World Cup, an unwanted hiatus was handed to the United States just four years later and with that pent up energy ready to be unleashed, they will certainly be a handful within the confines of Group B.
For those who know their World Cup history, Iran and the United States have already been pitted together in the group phase of the competition and 24 years ago, it was Mehdi Mahdavikia who went down in Iranian football folklore.
However, Mahdavikia and his teammates of France ‘98 will now have to join the nation in looking to the future and with Iran being handed a rather difficult group in 2022, progress to the Round of 16 is something that seems unlikely.
World Cup Group B Predictions
Harry Kane to score 5 or 6 goals in the World Cup – 10/3
After winning the 2018 edition of the World Cup Golden Boot, Harry Kane will not be in a mood to relinquish the accolade in Qatar and with the additional carrot of Wayne Rooney’s scoring record for England to still be broken, there is no greater impetus for the Tottenham talisman to succeed.
Especially if he is as lethal from the penalty spot as he was four years ago and with penalties making up the bulk of his goal haul in Russia, efforts from 12 yards could go a long way to seeing the England captain score either five or six goals for his country across the tournament as a whole.
