Group E World Cup 2022 Team Profiles

Spain

Spain and Germany are two former World Cup winners in this group and should reach the knockout stages. However, since landing the 2010 title in South Africa, subsequent World Cup finishes by Spain have been below par. They were dumped out in the 2014 group stage and then in Round 16 at the 2018 tournament.

The Spanish leaned heavily on their younger players during the 2022 UEFA Nations League matches. There’s a talented young squad with Rodri, Ferran Torres and Gavi, while the experienced heads of Sergio Busquets and Jordi Alba will be crucial.

Germany

The World Cup history of Germany needs no introduction, and they picked up their fourth title as recently as the 2014 edition. However, there was a massive upset at the 2018 World Cup when they failed to get out of a relatively weak group.

Germany have the pick of the form heading into the World Cup. But they are second favourites to win this group. Their head-to-head record against Spain isn’t terrific, with just one victory in their last seven against them.

Hansi Flick’s Germany shouldn’t have any trouble getting out of the group this time, regardless of what happens against Spain.

Japan

The Blue Samurai didn’t win their qualification group to reach the World Cup, finishing runners-up to Saudi Arabia. In their previous six appearances at the FIFA World Cup, Japan have failed to make it past the Round of 16.

In those previous appearances, they’ve alternated between a Group Stage exit and a Round of 16 exit. If the trend follows, they aren’t reaching the knockouts in 2022. Even ignoring that trend, it’s hard to see Japan, who have many European-based players, getting into the top two.

Costa Rica

Costa Rica were fourth in CONCACAF qualification. That put them into an intercontinental playoff against New Zealand, winning 1-0. During their qualification campaign, Los Ticos did claim match wins over Canada and the United States, both of whom qualified ahead of them. However, most of their squad is domestic-based, and it will be a battle for Costa Rica not to finish bottom.
