An American Lotto winner almost gave away her winning ticket to a homeless man prior to becoming a millionaire.
Ligia Dennis had some time to kill while waiting for her laundry in Los Angeles, so decided to buy a coffee and three $6 California Lucky Life Scratchers tickets to keep herself amused.
Having already given one ticket to her mother and another to her brother, a homeless man asked her for change and she almost handed him the final ticket before changing her mind.
And that proved to be a good decision for the 26-year-old hairdresser scratched to reveal the winning 'LIFE' symbol on her instant win card.
Bigger Win Than Expected
Thinking she had won $1000, Ligia decided to wait until after Christmas to claim her prize and was in for quite a shock.
It was only when she traveled to the California Lottery Van Nuys District Office on December 26 that she found out she had actually won $1,000 per week for 25 years - a total of $1.3million.
After a quick glance at the winning ticket the lottery employee smiled and said "How much do you think you won again? It's a little more than a thousand dollars!"
Miss Dennis has reportedly arranged to meet a financial adviser to discuss whether to take out the $1.3million in installments over 25 years, or a lump, pre-tax sum of around $750,000.
She also said she hopes to open her own hairdressing salon. "It’s always been my passion, I’ve been a hairdresser for about six years and It’s always been my dream to own my own salon."
