2015 Ebor Festival
The 2015 Ebor Festival is one of the last major race meetings of the flat season and will feature runners, riders and racegoers from all over the UK and overseas. Now staged over four days at York Racecourse, the event was established in 1843 with the first running of the Ebor Handicap - Europe's most valuable handicap.
The action begins on Wednesday 19th August with the prestigious Group One Juddmonte International, won in 2012 by the great Frankel and last year by dual Classic winner Australia. The Great Voltigeur Stakes and the Acomb Stakes are the other big races on what promises to be a thilling opening day.
Thursday 20th August is Ladies' Day and features the Lowther Stakes for fillies only and the Yorkshire Oaks being open exclusively to fillies and mares, won by The Fugue in 2013, before Tapestry claimed a third victory in the race for trainer Aidan O'Brien last season.
The big races keep on coming with the Nunthorpe Stakes, the Gimcrack Stakes and the Strensall Stakes taking place on Friday 21st August. The Nunthorpe is the feature race of the day, a Group 1 run over the minimum trip of 5 furlongs, won for the second time by Sole Power last year, four years on from the classy sprinter's 2010 success.
The best is saved for last with the Ebor Handicap and the Lonsdale Cup taking place on Saturday 22nd August to bring the curtain down on a fantastic four days of racing at York. Betfred is the current sponsor of the Ebor Handicap, which is run over a distance of 1 mile and 6 furlongs.
Last 10 Ebor Handicap Winners (Age in brackets)
2005 - Sergeant Cecil(6)
2006 - Mudawin(5)
2007 - Purple Moon(4)
2008 - All the Good(5)
2009 - Sesenta(5)
2010 - Dirar(5)
2011 - Moyenne Corniche(6)
2012 - Willing Foe(5)
2013 - Tiger Cliff(4)
2014 - Mutual Regard(5)
Mutual Regard became the sixth 5-year-old winner of the past 10 renewals when landing the spoils at 20/1 last year, beating Lord Van Percy by 1 and a quarter lengths, with 9/2 favourite Pallasator a further 2 lengths back in fourth.
Throughout the late 1990's until the early 2000's, 3-year-old horses had a good record in the race, but it's now been 13 years since that age group produced a winner.
Mutual Regard carried 9st 4lb to victory, as did Purple Moon in 2007 and Mephisto in 2004, representing the heaviest weighted winners since Sea Pigeon's 1979 success under a massive 10st burdon. Six of the last 10 winners have carried 9st or more, which is a recent trend as only 2 of the 20 winners prior to that spell had as much to carry.
The Ebor Handicap is a notoriously difficult puzzle to solve, but with the help of some recent trends we hope you can pick a winner. One way to boost your potential winnings is to make use of any enhanced odds offers that are available to get a bigger return on investment.
