Tip For The Olbg Mares’ Hurdle At Cheltenham Festival: La Bague Au Roi The Each-way Value Against Apple’s Jade
February 27, 2018
With the likes of short priced favourites Getabird, Footpad, Buveur D’Air and Apple’s Jade running on the first day of the Cheltenham Festival bookmakers will be holding their breath that a least one of the four ‘ good things ‘ fails to pass the post in front. But should the first three all oblige punters up and down the country will be shouting in the Gordon Elliott-trained Apple’s Jade, the last leg of potentially thousands of accumulator bets from Lands End to John O’Groats.

The mare has proved a superstar over the last few seasons and looks head and shoulders above the likely opposition in the OLBG Mares’ Hurdle but makes little appeal as a betting proposition at odds of 8-13. The final fence fall of Annie Power in this race a few years ago goes to show that there is no such thing as a certainty at national hunt racing’s four-day spectacular and with that in mind it could pay to look for some each-way value instead.
At the 10-1 available with Paddy Power ( NRNB ) the Warren Greatrex-trained La Bague Au Roi may be the one to take advantage should the short priced favourite fail to perform in the 2m 4f contest she won last year. Winner of seven of her nine starts over hurdles the daughter of Doctor Dino has looked top class on several occasions including when spreadeagling her opponents at Ascot on her most recent outing last month.

The seven-year-old was sent off a 10-1 chance in last season’s Trull House Stud Mares’ Novice Hurdle at the festival but could finish only seventh behind Let’s Dance after trying to make most of the running. A couple of sloppy jumps did not help the mount of Gavin Sheehan on that occasion but in winning all three starts this season, including when giving 4lb and a beating to the talented Jer’s Girl at Kempton, La Bague Au Roi has looked far more professional during this campaign and is capable of a much better showing 12 months later.
