Peter Scudamore's Expert Betting Tips - The Curragh, Newcastle and Newmarket

The Irish Derby is the feature race of the weekend and eight-time former champion jockey Peter Scudamore has a look at the race at the Curragh alongside FreeBets.com’s Jack Milner.

Elsewhere this weekend there is also good racing at Newmarket and Newcastle where the staying handicap, the Northumberland Plate, is the main attraction.

Scu’s Expert Racing Tips for the Irish Derby:

There is a very strong field assembled for the Irish Derby which is great news for Irish racing and those watching from the Curragh but what does that say about the Epsom Derby?

“I remember when the Derby was the Derby,” Scu remarks his preview video for the weekend before Jack wonders why so many horses who competed at Epsom in June are facing off against each other at the Curragh.

As for Peter’s expert racing tips for the Irish Derby, he fancies Hurricane Lane (9/2 with bet365*) to get the better of High Definition who is Aidan O’Brien’s first string as he goes for a 15th win in this race.

“Charlie Appleby is winning everything,” said Scu before pointing out that Hurricane Lane got the better of High Definition when they met at York.

Discussing how important a win in this race for Van Gogh (12/1 with BetVictor) would be from a breeding perspective for Coolmore, Scu and Jack talk about his chances of providing a first Classic win for American Pharoah as a sire.

Peter’s Expert Racing Betting Tips from Newcastle:

The first port of call at Newcastle is the Chipchase Stakes, a Group 3 sprint over 6 furlongs.

Peter and Jack discuss the chances of Diligent Harry who is being well backed for the race but Scu puts up Tabdeed as one who can get the better of the favourite at 15/2 with 888sport.

There are two marathon handicaps held over 2 miles at Newcastle on Saturday starting with the Northumberland Vase where the market is headed by East Asia (4/1 with BetVictor) who Scu believes has “an outstanding chance of completing a four-timer”.

Then, onto the Northumberland Plate itself and after talking up Newcastle as a “very well run track” Scu puts up the Mark Johnston pair of Themaxwecan (28/1 with bet365*) and Lucky Deal (33/1 with 888sport) as the horses to back each way.

Scu’s Newmarket Tips for Saturday:

Newmarket is the other track to concentrate on on Saturday and Peter has some horses he is keen on in the biggest races of the day.

Logicianwas once one of the highest horses around and this “beautiful horse” is back to try and return to winning ways at odds on in the Fred Archer Stakes but Scu is “not letting my heart rule my head” and recommends backing Desert Encounter to prove he can still hack it at this level at 9/2 with 888sport.

Finally, Jack and Scu cast their eyes over the Empress Fillies’ Stakes which is a Listed contest for promising two-year-olds.

Both agree that the best approach for this race is to chance a few who have some experience but are available at bigger prices.

Peter’s first horse to consider is Rock Melody (11/2 with Paddy Power) for first season trainer Kevin Philippart De Foy and his second fancy is Shouldavbeenmore (11/1 with bet365*) who should come on from her recent outing.
