Tuesday saw the weights for the 2023 Melbourne Cup announced, and the Willie Mullins-trained Vauban, the current antepost favourite for the race, has been allocated 55kg (8 stone 9lb) for the big race.
Mullins is no stranger to sending horses to Flemington in search of landing ‘the race that stops a nation’ and has gone close with Max Dynamite (on two occasions) and Wicklow Brave.
Winner of the Triumph Hurdle at the 2022 Cheltenham Festival, Vauban has enjoyed tremendous success since switching back to the flat. He destroyed the field off the front at Royal Ascot when landing the Copper Horse Handicap and then followed that up with Group 3 success in the Ballyroan Stakes at Naas at the end of August.
And Mullins is also set to saddle Absurde, who impressively won the Ebor at York - he has been allocated 53kg (8 stone 5lb) for the Flemington showpiece.
