Paddy Power has been rated Bookmaker Of The Month for the second successive time by www.freebets.com in its report on Bookmaker Money Back Offers in September. The Dublin-based bookmaker took Bookmaker Of The Month for the third time in the last five months and could be said to justify Paddy Power’s claims to be pioneers of the Money Back Special.
Freebets.com is an internet sports betting service which produces a monthly report analysing Money Back offers from leading online bookmakers. The report is designed to be a useful tool to help sports bettors identify which bookmakers offer added value via the ‘insurance’ of Money Back offers. The analysis was provided by comparing all Money Back offers presented on Freebets.com website and the Bookmaker Of The Month determined by an algorithm which gives a cumulative rating to 19 top bookmakers.
Findings – September Bookmaker Of The Month
While providing Money Back Specials on a wide number of sports throughout September, Paddy Power’s Bookmaker Of The Month rating benefitted from an unbroken schedule of NFL and Premier League fixtures. Money Back if the last touchdown was 25+ yards had a relatively high value given how often it occurs and the fact it was available on every NFL match gave the offer added weight. Another hefty Money Back Special on Premier League football helped set Paddy Power apart from the opposition with its Money Back if the match ends in a draw offer. Seven out of 33 Premier League matches in September were drawn which gives an indication of how often the bookmaker could pay out on this Money Back Special.
Bet365 ranked second for September with a selection of Money Back offers on horse racing, football and greyhound racing while William Hill’s Money Back football offers, Acca Insurance, Bore Draw and Goalscorer Second chance scored highly in the ratings to help the UK’s leading bookmaker take third place.
Three of the 19 featured bookmakers, Ladbrokes, Betway and William Hill, offered mobile exclusive Money Back Specials. The table below shows no change in the rankings when Mobile Exclusive offers have been removed to leave Money Back offers available to all web customers.
The Mobile Exclusive table shows how bookmakers rank for Mobile Exlusive Money Back offers only.
Money Back Offer Of The Month
The Money Back Offer Of The Month is deemed the individual offer giving most value to punters, it is rated on the maximum refund value and the chance of a payout. Factors such as the number of events for which the offer is available are not taken into account and there are no weightings applied for event and market types.
Paddy Power had dominated the Money Back Offer Of The Month on three previous occasions and came up trumps again with its Money Back Special when Minnesota Vikings hosted Pittsburgh Steelers at Wembley on 29th September. The Irish bookmaker offered to refund losing bets if the last scoring play was a field goal. The only other scoring option is a touchdown which was only a marginal favourite between the two.
Betfred was ranked second with its Money Back if driver fails to finish the Belgian Grand Prix which has a higher than average number of DNFs, especially when the weather turns wet as is often the case at Spa. Paddy Power provided eight of the top ten Money Back Offers in September.
Unibet made significant changes to its website during the summer. One of the improvements was to introduce new Money Back offers to its customers and as a result Unibet has been added to the list of monitored bookmakers from 1 September.
The number of unique Money Back offers has remained almost static for the last three months and September saw another increase in the Total Bookmaker Offers, four of which are accounted by the introduction of Unibet. Total Bookmaker Offers take into account generic offers by counting the number of days an offer, Money Back Any Football Match Ending 0-0 for example, is available.

‘Money Back’ is a widely accepted term in the betting industry for real cash and free bet refunds on selected events and markets offered as insurance against a scenario proposed by the bookmaker. A typical example of Money Back in August was a refund offered on losing US Open Outright Winner bets if Andy Murray wins the Men’s Singles title, i.e ‘Money Back if Murray Wins’.
From 1st July 2013, the report includes analysis of mobile exclusive offers in addition to those promoted via bookmakers’ main websites which are available to both web and mobile customers. Retail offers are not included.
In order to determine its Bookmaker of the Month for Money Back Offers, www.freebets.com uses an algorithm which takes into account the number of offers available, the maximum free bet or cash refund value, the likelihood of the scenario to come true, in addition to the number of events and markets which qualify for the offer. The www.freebets.com team draws on over 50 years’ experience in the betting industry to attribute weightings for the various factors in the formula in order to provide comparative values to the complex array of promotions.
