Rafa Benitez has shortened to just 8/11 with Skybet to lose his job before the end of the season as Liverpool’s disastrous season took another turn for the worst, being dumped out of the FA Cup at the first hurdle by Championship side Reading. A 2-1 AET defeat to the Royals has left the Reds relying on the Europa League as their only realistic prospect of silverware and the knives are out for Benitez after this latest failing. Liverpool currently sit seventh in the Premier League, out of the Champions League and both domestic cups and despite talk of the club’s owners reportedly facing a bill of up to £25m to pay-off the Spaniard, Skybet have dropped Rafa to odds-on to get the chop, down from evens ahead of yesterday’s game and 7/4 on Tuesday. A price of evens is on offer that Rafa will see the season out. Benitez will also be sweating on the fitness of his star men Fernando Torres and Steven Gerrard, with the pair both picking up injuries in last night’s humbling. Torres is today being assessed for a twisted knee whilst Gerrard pulled up last night with a hamstring problem. Although the signing of Maxi Rodriguez will give the Reds a welcome boost, Benitez has failed to address Liverpool’s over reliance on their star pairing and even a minor lay-off for the pair could finally put their top-four aspirations to bed. The same bookie is also offering 4/1 that Benitez won’t be in charge for Liverpool’s game at Stoke on Saturday.
