Trainer Henry Cecil experienced mixed fortunes in today's Lingfield Classic Trials.
His Zamindar filly Timepiece was expected to enhance her Oaks prospects by taking the totesportcasino.com Oaks Trial, but the 4/7 favourite was outpointed close home by Dyna Waltz, ridden by champion jockey Ryan Moore.
The John Gosden trained winner is now a best price 16/1 for Epsom whereas the runner-up has been pushed out to 12/1 with Boylesport after being as short as 6/1 prior to today's race.
Cecil had a lot more to cheer about after the totesport.com Derby Trial Stakes when his Bullet Train ran out a clear winner.
The 11/4 chance made nearly all of the running and was not hard pressed to hold Dubawi Phantom by 2 1/4 length.
The Sadler's Wells filly is a half-sister to the high class middle distance performer Powerscourt and is guaranteed to appreciate the Derby trip.
Jockey Tom Queally said " It was a good performance. They went an even gallop all the way and I was impressed with the way he stretched and quickened.
" He's improving and we've a nice horse on our hands."
As regards Epsom the trainer was more cautious stating:
" He's improving all the time. He won't necessarily ( run in the Derby ), you don't run in the Derby unless you think you have got a chance.
" I'm not saying he won't go for the Derby but, we'll just see what the trials bring and what Prince Khalid wants to do."
Bullet Train is now a general 12/1 shot for the Investec Derby, but with his owner also responsible for current second favourite Workforce, it would be wise to see how that horse performs in next weeks Dante Stakes at York, as a good run from Sir Michael Stoute's charge may see Bullet Train re-routed to Royal Ascot for the King Edward Stakes.
The Aidan O'Brien stable continues to experience a turbulent time at present with his Derby Trial runner Captain James Cook having to be pulled up after breaking down.
Tomorrow sees Ireland's most significant trial in the Derrinstown Stud Derby Trial at Leopardstown, and with O'Brien providing two of the four runners it will be interesting to see if Ballydoyle can at last reveal a genuine Epsom candidate to join St Nicholas Abbey.
