Favourite, Jan Vermeer's betting odds eased yesterday as the Epsom Derby betting becomes more open. The colt's odds shortened dramatically early in the week leading up to and following news that long time Investec Derby favourite St Nicholas Abbey was taken out.
The betting market has settled since racing plans have been confirmed and pundits are looking elsewhere in what is looking to be a wide open event. Jan Vermeer's odds continued to drift this morning with William Hill offering 3/1 against Aidan O'Brien's Classic favourite, despite jockey Johnny Murtagh's belief that his mount has a 'huge' chance. He said: "I think he's the ideal horse for Epsom as he seems to have everything, he has speed, stamina and good balance, so I'm quietly confident he's going to run a huge race.
In opposing the Ballydoyle horse, punters may well look to jockey choices. Rewilding odds have shortened as low as 5/1 however Bet365 and William Hill offered odds of 13/2 early today. Jockey Frankie Dettori is excited about the colt's chances after showing an impressive turn of foot when quickening clear in his trial at Goodwood. He should have no problem with the track or trip and could prove a popular tip.
There has been interest in Kieren Fallon's mount, Al Zir. Saeed Bin Suroor's colt ran third in the Racing Post Trophy and is expected to improve for the step up in trip, Victor Chandler offer odds of 20/1, a price that was snapped up with other bookmakers yesterday.
