Stefano Domenicali, the team principal of Ferrari, has said that a victory at Silverstone is crucial to the future championship hopes.
Despite winning the opening race of the season, they have failed to gain another top podium place subsequently. Although it seems that they have made significant improvements to their car, they have suffered some bad strokes of luck, and none more so than the last race in Valencia where they got stuck behind the safety car whilst Lewis Hamilton raced ahead.
Ferrari has said that they now deserve victory. The car has not been modified for Silverstone with major upgrades, though there are still a few new parts which could fine tune its performance on this new Silverstone circuit.
Moving on from the safety car incident in Valencia McLaren has urged the FIA not to make immediate responsive changed to safety car rules. Their managing director, Jonathan Neale, said that a degree of unpredictability was good for the sport.
Elsewhere, Williams is hedging its bets on whether to use its new exhaust system at Silverstone. They will keep their powder dry until Friday’s practice. This system, which enhances the diffuser performance by blowing exhaust fumes through it and thus enhances down force, is already being used by several other teams.
So far it has been a shockingly bad season for Williams and right at the start of the season there was major disappointment at the Williams Factory in Grove in Oxfordshire as soon as they discovered how poor the relative performance of their car compared to the major teams was. Nico Hulkenberg, their new driver who began the season with tremendous optimism and promise has so far scored only one point.
This weekend’s race should be a thrilling event. A new section has been built at Silverstone at a cost of $5million and it will be used for the first time this weekend. It has added 750 meters to the tracks length.
Ferrari are placed at 14/1 to win the Constructors Championship this year with bookmaker Sportingbet who offer a £25 FREE BET for new customers until Sunday July12th .
