It could be argued (cynically) that this fixture adds little more to the World Cup than the chance for FIFA to squeeze out every last possible penny of revenue. On the other hand it does give teams the chance to bounce back from their semi-final defeats, restore some pride to their respective nations and to go out with a bang. This should be an intriguing encounter, with Joachim Low’s much-heralded German team the odds-on favourites to end their World Cup in style and conquer Uruguay in 90 minutes (best price of 8/11 with Betfred). However, Uruguay have proved in this competition they are a highly accomplished side and Oscar Tabarez’s men will be eager to fight all the way. As their continent’s last men standing, they’ll want to do South America proud. Add to that the return of the eye-catching Ajax striker Luis Suarez and the odds of 9/2 about Uruguay being victorious (William Hill) look appetising. Speaking of returning players, Germany’s Thomas Muller is back for Die Mannschaft and is a handsome 8/1 to open the scoring (bet365), with the Bayern forward looking to add to the 4 goals he has already netted in South Africa. With Diego Forlan looking as lively as ever against Holland, both Forlan (12/5 with Skybet) and Suarez (3/1 William Hill) look fine value to score at any time. Of course, Miroslav Klose – just one goal short of matching the all time World Cup record – cannot be discounted. He’s a tempting 11/8 with Victor Chandler to score at any stage and etch his name firmly into the history books. Interestingly, when taking into account all the World Cup tournaments since 1986, the third place play-off has produced an average of over 4 goals. With at least three of the players (Klose, Muller and Forlan) still in real contention for the Golden Boot, all the signals point to the net bulging, so the real value can be found with the 23/20 on offer at Bodog for over 2.5 goals.
