Described by trainer Aidan O'Brien as the fastest horse he has trained, Starspangledbanner puts that reputation on the line today when he attempts to win the fourth Group 1 of his career in Newmarket's Darley July Cup.
The son of speedster Choisir, the Australian import recorded two Group 1 successes in his home country before joining the powerful Ballydoyle team earlier this year.
A promising fifth in the Duke Of York stakes on his debut for his new connections, was followed by an impressive victory in the most competitive sprint race of the season, in the shape of the Golden Jubilee Stakes at Royal Ascot.
Making virtually all of the running, the colt never looked in danger of being caught, beating several of today's rivals, including runner-up Society Rock and fourth home Fleeting Spirit, who may have had the worse of the draw that day.
Trainer Aidan O'Brien is looking forward to today's race saying: " We've known since soon after he arrived at Ballydoyle that Starspangledbanner was a very, very quick horse and we were delighted with what he showed when winning the Golden Jubilee the way he did."
O'Brien will be looking to record his first victory in the race since Mozart in 2001, while jockey Johnny Murtagh will be bidding for his second July Cup, following his win on Frizzante in 2004.
StanJames are currently a standout 2/1 about Starspangledbanner ahead of Fleeting Spirit, a 4/1 shot with Bet365 and William Hill.
