Paul Casey who shot a brilliant 67 to go 11-under-par yesterday will be looking to repeat the early scoring that has epitomised his Open challenge at St Andrews this week.
The 32-year-old Englishman got off to flying starts in his last two rounds shooting 5 under par for the outward nine on both days.
A similar start today will heap the pressure on surprise tournament leader 27-year-old South African Louis Oosthuizen.
Casey playing with compatriot Lee Westwood yesterday, had reduced Oosthuizen’s six shot advantage to just one when he walked off the seventh green with his fourth birdie of the day.
But for the second successive time was unable to build his score on St Andrews back nine and Oosthuizen held his nerve exceptionally well to rebuild his lead with his third round 69.
They tee it up together as the final pairing this afternoon and Casey would love to become the first Englishman since Nick Faldo to lift the Claret Jug.
Asked what it would mean to emulate his hero Faldo, Casey said: “I’m not sure I am able to explain what it would mean. It’s the ultimate for me.”
Oosthuizen has never made the cut in his three previous Open Championships and faces the most nerve wracking 18 holes if his young career.
Casey has two top ten finishes in majors behind him, experience that could prove crucial as the intensity of the occasion ramps up this afternoon.
His betting odds were 5/2 with 888 Sport this morning; the online bookie offer a refund to new customers if the first bet loses.
