The big race of Day 2 of the Glorious Goodwood festival is undoubtedly the Sussex Stakes. The Group One race run over a mile is sure to be competitive, not least because the winner lands almost £180,000 for their troubles.
With Dick Turpin having been withdrawn, the market suggests a clear run for stable-mate Canford Cliffs. The fellow Hannon-trained horse is priced as the 8/11 odds-on favourite with bet365 and is expected to perform well again after impressing at Ascot in June.
Second favourite is the Aiden O’Brien-trained Rip Van Winkle. With Ryan Moore getting the late nod (he was due in Dick Turpin’s saddle), odds of 5/2 with Ladbrokes look tempting. The 4-year-old has run only once all season – a 6th place at Ascot – but impressed last season with some good wins and places.
Elsewhere, there is value to be found in backing Premio Loco at 8/1 with Victor Chandler. Having won by a length at a Group 2 race at Ascot earlier in the month, and after gaining victory at Newmarket at the end of June, the 6-year-old could be one to watch.
Watch out too for the bookies that are giving Best Odds Guaranteed. If you take the early price and the starting price is higher, they’ll pay out at the higher price. Those bookies include Boylesports, Paddy Power and bet365.
It’s also a great time to get hold of the free bet offers that are still available if you open a new betting account. There’s a £25 free bet on offer with Stan James, the same at Ladbrokes, and a free bet bundle offer from Victor Chandler worth up to £100.
So with Dick Turpin absent, will it be Canford Cliffs to become victorious, or can one of the less fancied horses stand and deliver the goods for their owner?
