Goodwood's Betfair Gordon Stakes, won last year by King George VI winner Harbinger, has proved a good guide to the outcome of the St Leger in recent years and today's race should continue the trend.
The winner, Rebel Soldier, is likely to take in York's Great Voltigeur Stakes next, but trainer Jeremy Noseda issued a word of caution over the colt's ability to stay the St Leger trip.
Bookmaker Paddy Power, who offer a £100 free bet when staking £50 on your first bet, are a top price 16/1 about Rebel Soldier, although the colt is as short as 7/1 with Bluesq.
Runner-up Dandino ran a cracking St Leger trial, staying on to such effect that he would have caught the winner in a few more strides.
Doncaster is likely to suit the Dansili colt more than Goodwood, and the 11/1 available with both Paddy Power and totesport looks pretty fair.
The best value available in the ante-post market however, lies with the third home, Arctic Cosmos.
Well out the back in the Goodwood Group 3 event, the son of Derby winner North Light made eyecatching late headway and gives the impression that the St Leger trip will be perfect for John Gosden's improver.
Arctic Cosmos is as short as 8/1 with Bluesq. but totesport's 16/1 is far too big and at those odds is an early ante-post value tip for the final Classic of the season.
