Bookmakers are offering free bets for the quarter-finals of the European Darts Championships in Dinslaken, Germany today.
It was an uncomfortable day for the tournament favourites with Phil Taylor and Raymond van Barneveld having to dig deep to progress into today’s quarter-finals.
Andy Smith was matching Taylor after the first eight legs before the world number one put together four superb legs to pull away for a 10-5 victory.
Bernd Roith, a caterer from Tuebingen in Germany playing in his first televised event, fought his way to 7-5 lead against world number two van Barneveld.
The German crowd were denied witnessing one of darts biggest upsets when ‘Barney’ rallied to a 10-7 win.
Speaking after the match, van Barneveld said: “This is one of the hardest battles I’ve had in my career; Bernd was relaxed all the way through”.
Fifth seed Terry Jenkins was upsetting the odds when knocking out Aussie Simon Whitlock 10-8 to book his quarter-final place.
Colin Lloyd is impressing in this tournament; he beat world number three James Wade in the first round and produced another fine display winning 10-6 against Michael van Gerwen.
